As we reported on Monday, Elon Musk deleted a tweet where he reacted to the foiled assassination attempt on Donald Trump by questioning why no one had tried to assassinate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
But as screenshots are forever and threatening the President and Vice President is a federal crime, the Secret Service is now officially investigating the pro-Trump Musk for his tweet.
The Secret Service “is aware of the social media post made by Elon Musk,” said Nate Herring, a spokesperson for the Secret Service. “As a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence. We can say, however, that the Secret Service investigates all threats related to our protectees.”
The Secret Service also said it was "withholding" other information due to "enforcement proceedings," so they may be moving forward with formal charges.
After he deleted the tweet, Musk tried to pass it off as a joke that other people "just didn't get."
Conversely, both President Biden and Vice President Harris shared tweets expressing their gratitude that Trump wasn't injured. The Vice President has repeatedly said that "there's no place in America" for political violence. VP Harris also said she was “deeply disturbed” by the would-be attack on Trump on Sunday and said the government must act to ensure the incident did not lead to further violence.
Musk is also expected to be mentioned in Attorney General Merrick Garland's forthcoming announcement revealing the names of more Russian assets helping spread disinformation on Twitter and other social media sites.
