President Joe Biden will address the nation tonight at 8 pm EDT/5 pm PDT for the first time since ending his re-election campaign on Sunday and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
The President, who had been in isolation at the Biden family's vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, recovering from Covid, shocked Democrats and Republicans alike with Sunday's announcement.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President," he wrote in the letter posted to all of his social media channels.
"And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," he wrote. "I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision."
He returned to the White House on Monday after being cleared by his physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor.
In the days since the announcement, VP Harris has raised a record $126 million and racked up a stunning amount of endorsements. She's also secured enough delegates to be the Democratic Party's presumptive nominee for President.
During Wednesday's White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was barraged with questions regarding the President's decision.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Wednesday Biden had huddled with a small group of advisers and family members on Saturday evening and made the final decision to step aside on Sunday.
Jean-Pierre declined to divulge too many details, but said it had "nothing to do with his health."
"Obviously, this is a historic moment but a decision like this is very personal. It's not easy to make and I think there are very rare politicians who could look at the situation and make a decision, right?" Jean-Pierre said.
The President's remarks will be carried live on all major networks and cable news outlets. You can also stream it live on the White House YouTube Channel.
