Oprah Winfrey hosted a star-studded virtual event Thursday night where she sat down with Vice President Kamala Harris in front of a small audience for a frank and often emotional conversation.
Hundreds of thousands of viewers tuned in to "United For America," raising a whopping $100 million for the Harris/Walz campaign in just an hour.
The event included comedians Chris Rock and Ben Stiller along with actors Julia Roberts, Tracee Ellis Ross, Meryl Streep, and Bryan Cranston, who all shared their reasons for backing VP Harris and asked her questions.
Rock endorsed the Vice President live, saying he wanted to "bring his daughters to the White House to meet this Black woman President!"
Streep created a viral moment when she addressed the Vice President as "President," to which the VP quipped, "Forty-seven days!"
But there were also very serious moments during the event. The family of Amber Thurman, the young Black mother who died in 2022 due to fully treatable complications from a miscarriage, shared their heartbreaking story.
"You're looking at a mother that is broken, the worst pain ever that a mother, that a parent can ever feel, Amber's mother, Shanette Williams, said through tears, with most of the emotional audience joining her.
"I'm just so sad," Vice President Harris told Ms. Williams. "And the courage that you all have shown is extraordinary."
Natalie Griffith, a 15-year-old student from Apalachee High School in Georgia who was shot twice while in math class two weeks ago, sat with her parents in the front row.
“What are we doing?” asked Natalie’s mother, Marilda Griffith. “We have a job, that job is to protect our children. We have to stop it," she said, overcome by emotion.
