Celebrities were flocking to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris immediately after a racist joke told by a comedian at Sunday night's Trump rally at Madison Square Garden went viral.
Tony Hinchliffe, who goes by "Kill Tony," may have sunk the Trump campaign for good after he referred to Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage" during his routine, which even offended the MAGA crowd.
Social media exploded, sharing footage of Trump throwing paper towels at Puerto Rican residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
While the Trump camp failed at its attempts to distance itself from the outcry over the invited comedian's vetted remarks, several high-profile celebrities stepped up to not just denounce the joke and the rally, but to also emphatically endorse Kamala Harris.
Almost immediately after the clip of Kill Tony was posted, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny shared a video on his Instagram from the VP's account endorsing her plan for Puerto Rico. In the video, Vice President Harris says, “There’s so much at stake in this election for Puerto Rican voters and for Puerto Rico.” A representative confirmed that Bad Bunny is supporting VP Harris.
Luis Fonsi, a Puerto Rican artist who sings the hit “Despacito,” posted a similar message on Instagram: “We are not OK with this constant hate,” he wrote. “It’s been abundantly clear that these people have no respect for us.”
Ricky Martin, who had previously endorsed Harris along with fellow Puerto Rican singers Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, was also offended by the comment and said “That’s what they think of us,” on Instagram.
