Rufus Wainwright Says He Was Mortified to Appear on Donald Trump's Playlist

Rufus Wainwright reacted on Tuesday after Donald Trump played the musician's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah at last night's town hall meltdown.

According to reports, Donald Trump is obsessed with his Spotify playlist and will often play DJ while down in Mar-a-Lago. After getting tired of answering questions during Monday's event in Pennsylvania, Trump had the crowd listen to several of his favorite songs as he gently swayed along.

One of the songs selected by Trump was Wainright's cover and it was an odd choice. An openly gay man, Wainwright has called Trump's administration "pure evil." And the musician was quick to respond on Tuesday via a statement that began:

"The song ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen has become an anthem dedicated to peace, love, and acceptance of the truth. I’ve been supremely honored over the years to be connected with this ode to tolerance. Witnessing Trump and his supporters commune with this music last night was the height of blasphemy."

The message from Wainwright continued:

"Of course, I in no way condone this and was mortified, but the good in me hopes that perhaps in inhabiting and really listening to the lyrics of Cohen’s masterpiece, Donald Trump just might experience a hint of remorse over what he’s caused. I’m not holding my breath."
