[COMMENTARY] We Are All Living In #bratsummer Now

If you're not GenZ, you might be wondering exactly what "brat summer" is and why all the kids suddenly seem to be having one.

I know, girl. So confusing!

Let this GenX former alternative radio DJ lay out all the "brat" Talk talk for you, no cap:

British DJ CharliXCX released her album "brat" full of Club classics in June, immediately creating a sensation thanks to the crazy catchy  "Von dutch" and its empowering lyrics:

It's okay to just admit that you're jealous of me
Yeah, I heard you talk about me, that's the word on the street
You're obsessin', just confess it, put your hands up
It's obvious, I'm your number one

It's a bop, as the kids say (at least, I think they still say it).

CharliXCX explained that "brat" has multiple meanings, but it all essentially means being unapologetically and authentically yourself. Embracing being messy as being fabulous, instead of pretending you're perfect, from your fashion to your friends.

It's "being confident, putting yourself out there, being out, being about, being the center of attention," CharlieXCX says. "A brat is a girl who feels herself but then also maybe has a breakdown but kind of like parties through it."

Giving young women that kind of positive reinforcement when social media gives them the opposite message far too often is a 360-degree dance move in self-confidence that all generations of women can get behind.

And CharliXCX is all in on the VP.

"kamala IS brat," the singer-songwriter tweeted on July 21st. Her tweet had over 50 million views at press time.

Also embracing the "brat summer" vibes along with the VP are her mother and her stepdaughter, who are fully on board with the brat-itude with the rest of the KHive.

Ella Emhoff shared CharlieXCX's tweet about her "Momala," AKA the next President of the United States, on her Instagram Story.

The bright green aesthetic of the album cover also immediately became ubiquitous on social media, reaching all the way to the VP's official campaign.

ActBlue is teaming up with Democratic Lt. Governors to boost the "brat summer" mood by selling "Demo(b)rat" merch, and props to the marketing genius who got on that so fast.

We're ALL having a brat summer now, fam. And that's a good thing.

OK, Boomer?
