You’re Either Evil Or A Charlatan, Republican Tells Xenophobic Colleagues

One Republican, more than any other, stands out in the past few years for speaking out against the worst behaviors from colleagues in his own party. Adam Kinzinger called out Donald Trump for his role in the January insurrection attempt, and called out those on the right who tried to downplay or ignore it. Now, he’s responding to Republican colleagues who are attacking Afghan refugees by sowing distrust and fear amongst their constituents.

While Joe Biden is being criticized for not getting all Americans and our Afghani allies — individuals who worked with the U.S. military during the long occupation — out of the country more quickly, some Republicans are still fighting to prevent these allies from being safely relocated in the United States.

Kinzinger responded to this Sunday morning, saying that Republicans who are trying to make Americans fear having refugees from Afghanistan enter the country are “either evil at heart…or charlatan[s] only interested in winning an election.”

He didn’t name names, but we’ve seen the behavior he’s describing from a few Republicans. Two examples follow below, in the form of a single tweet from Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and a thread from Representative Tom Tiffany (R-WI).

Boebert suggests that Americans should be concerned about the vetting process for bringing refugees into the country, hinting that the Biden Administration will allow terrorists in as refugees. Tiffany goes even further, suggesting that refugees should be taken to a third-party country to be vetted before being allowed into the U.S.
