“You Say That Like It’s A Bad Thing” GOP Senator Complains Biden’s Policies Are “Humane”

With Joe Biden in office, the Republican party is laser-focused on the border. When one GOP Senator complained that Biden has emphasized humane treatment, it raised the question: is this another case of saying the quiet part out loud?

Under the Trump administration, the line between refuge-seekers and illegal immigrants blurred, with child separation policies expanded beyond the point of cruelty and time limits on detainment lifted. When Biden took office, he acted quickly to reverse some of these policies, and to support the reunification of families that had been separated.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) lashed out Monday morning to complain about an increase of immigrants trying to enter the country, and to complain about Biden’s focus on humane treatment. In a series of tweets, he compared this to quotes from the last two Democratic Presidents, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Many on Twitter were quick to question this criticism — is humane treatment a terrible thing, and did Senator Cornyn really intend to suggest that it is?

As Lawfare explains here, Biden did not immediately remove policies regarding pandemic limits, and therefore continued to keep out the majority of asylum seekers.

However, the Department of Homeland Security, and Biden’s executive order, affirm the end of policies of placing those seeking asylum into punitive programs intended for criminal border crossings. This is a beginning to returning the U.S. to a recognition of seeking asylum as a human right, and as a separate matter from criminal illegal entry.
