The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal Editorial Board on Wednesday shredded Republican United States Senator Ron Johnson as “the most irresponsible representative of Wisconsin citizens since the infamous Senator Joseph R. McCarthy in the 1950s.”
Johnson’s lies and his anti-science rhetoric, the Board wrote in a savage op-ed, are responsible for the deaths of thousands of Wisconsinites from the COVID-10 pandemic.
“We don’t shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways. It’s a risk we accept so we can move about,” Johnson said in March of 2020 during the early days of the crisis.
In addition to having mimicked former President Donald Trump in downplaying the severity of the crisis, Johnson has also become a right-wing megaphone in the movement’s nonsensical opposition to coronavirus vaccines.
“Johnson’s rhetoric throughout the pandemic fit neatly into Trump’s game plan: Downplay the outbreak to divert attention from a bungled response,” the Board wrote. “But the worst was yet to come.”
Johnson’s outright denial that the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol was carried out by pro-Trump loyalists and his adherence to Trump’s “big lie” that the 2020 election was fraudulent places him in a position of uniquely dangerous power, the paper warned:
Whether or not Johnson believes the nonsense he spews, there is little doubt he seeks to benefit politically from this cynical theater. As a Tea Party Republican and climate change denier in 2010, he attracted support from the fossil fuel industry. Later, by minimizing the pandemic and touting questionable treatments for COVID, he vouched for a former president’s lies and boosted his own credibility with the Trump base in his home state. Johnson continues to put his own interests ahead of yours. He continues to put himself first and democracy second. And he continues to show why he is not fit to be your senator.
