Anti-vaxxers across the country are fighting to prevent the life-saving COVID-19 vaccines from being mandated — in food service, hospitals, and other workplaces, as well as schools. Now one group of anti-vaxxers says they can use the power bestowed by their employment to “shut the country down” in protest against mandates.
According to CDL Life, the organization — to the extent that anything has been ‘organized’ here — has been primarily driven on Tiktok and in one Facebook group. The group, StopTheTires2020, was formed last year to plan a similar protest against lockdowns and other COVID-19 precautions, and is set to ‘private,’ so only members can see who is in the group, and what they post.
However, CDL Life quotes several group members discussing the risk to their employment, and the apparent intention of some truckers to pull off the road, park at truck stops, or just stay home for the day.
As seen in the clip from 7News below, this protest is planned for the same day as a similar one in Australia, where drivers want an end to mandatory COVID-19 testing and mask rules, as well as the push for vaccination.
The Trucker reports that some drivers in the U.S. aren’t planning to park, but to “slow their rigs to a crawl.”
There are currently no mandates for truckers to be vaccinated, but the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s guidance on workplace vaccine mandates affirms that religious and medical exemptions be available, if such a rule is implemented by any employer.
