The Mayor of Minneapolis is asking a question that many Americans are asking in the wake of the death of Goerge Floyd at the hands of a police officer. Mayor Jacob Frey asked why the police officer accused of killing Floyd has not been arrested? Floyd died after an officer placed a knee on his neck. during the video, Floyd can be her saying that he cannot breathe. The question that Mayor Frey is asking is basic and fundamental. Frey said, Why is the man who killed George Floyd, not in jail? If you had done it, or I had done it, we would be behind bars right now. [I] cannot come up with a good answer to that question. And so I’m calling upon Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to act on the evidence before him, I’m calling on him to charge the arresting officer in this case.”
Frey’s statement is true of all police-involved killings. When a police officer kills someone unjustifiably they are usually not charged right away. If charges are brought against them it will be through a grand jury. Although the four police officers in the Floyd case have been fired by the Minneapolis Police Department this is not enough for many Americans. Calls for the arrest of the officer responsible for Floyd’s death are growing louder and louder.
Thousands of people have arrived in Minneapolis to demonstrate against the police. The police have responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.
This is a developing story.
