(WATCH) Walmart Ad Featuring Gay Couple Outrages Conservative Group
The way companies market to their customers has changed dramatically over the last few years. Gone are the days of commercials that only feature straight white families. Retailers have discovered the value of appealing to a diverse customer base.
Walmart is no exception to this rule. The company has worked hard to create more diversity among its workforce and suppliers. The retail giant recently debuted a commercial featuring a young gay couple shopping in one of their stores. Many on the right have expressed outrage at Walmart’s decision.
The chief organization taking offense is the American Family Association. The group, which is ferociously anti-gay, has deep ties within the Republican party.
While the organization feels many companies are “leftist”, they consider Walmart to be a conservative bastion. According to AFA president, Tim Wildmon, “At least with a company like Amazon, we knew they were liberal from the outset. But this seems more like a betrayal from a well-known friend. Sam Walton is probably turning over in his grave.”
An email blast from the AFA paints the spot as a promotion of gay marriage. The ad, however, features two gay men experiencing a first date in the store’s aisles.
Is grocery shopping at Walmart first date-worthy? We thought it’d be a good idea. And these two definitely learned how much it could really reveal about a person…

While a massive retailer like Walmart features an incredibly diverse array of customers, Wildmon feels like they must answer to conservatives alone. He writes, “I honestly never thought Walmart would join the cultural revolution and reject the beliefs of its customer base.”
The Christian Conservative organization has created a petition demanding that Walmart removes the ad. Walmart has yet to respond to the organizations petition.
