Even before the 2020 election, Donald Trump was spreading propaganda to discredit the outcome, and even then, strategists worried that a lack of faith in the process would deter voters from bothering to cast a ballot. No matter how much he’s warned about this, though, the former president has made it clear he’s not stopping.

How much role has Trump’s election disinformation had in GOP losses? It’s hard to say, although a CNN analysis after January 6th found that at least some of the participants in the attack on the Capitol — that is, people who claimed to believe that the election had been stolen from Trump — didn’t vote themselves, and for some of them, it may have been due to belief the election would be ‘rigged.’

Then Trump and Mitch McConnell clashed over the same thing, as McConnell feared that Trump’s election propaganda would push Republicans away from the polls in Georgia’s special election — which both Republican candidates subsequently lost. Recently, Trump threatened to pull an endorsement from a candidate over the suggestion that the party should look ahead, rather than back at 2020.

Now, even as Fox News host Stuart Varney tries to explain to Trump that obsessing over his 2020 loss could be detrimental to Republican candidates, the former president isn’t hearing it.

“Yeah, I actually think it is good for me…I think it’s the opposite actually…I think for us to win the election we have to know how they cheated, because otherwise they’ll cheat again. And we do know how they cheated…Republicans have to do something about it or they’re going to be very disappointed.”
