On Tuesday, a white man shot up 3 massage parlors killing 8 people. During a press conference, though, a Cherokee County Sheriff seemed to sympathize with the shooter more than the victims. Later in the day, it was revealed that the officer had social media posts blaming China for the Coronavirus.
During the same presser, Sheriff Jay Barker essentially said the shootings didn’t qualify as a hate crime because the killer says it wasn’t racially motivated. During his Wednesday show, Trevor Noah blasted the Atlanta cops saying if this wasn’t racism then nothing is.
The Comedy Central host began, “First of all, f*ck you man! You killed six Asian people. If there’s anyone who’s racist, its a motherf*cker who kills 6 Asian women. Your murders speak louder than your words.”
Noah continued, “What makes it even more painful is that we saw it coming. We see these things happening. People have been warning, people in the Asian communities have been tweeting, they’ve been saying, ‘Please help us. We’re getting punched in the street. We’re getting slurs written on our doors.’ We’ve seen this happening.”
“But whatever you do,” he said, “don’t tell me this thing had nothing to do with race…You can’t disconnect this violence from the racist stereotypes people attach to Asian women. This guy blamed a specific race of people for his problems, and then murdered them because of it. If that isn’t racism, then the word has no meaning.”
Noah then turned his ire towards Sheriff Jay Baker. “You see the police officer come out and almost try to humanize the shooter more than the people who got shot. It’s always interesting who the police try to find the humanity in.”
