WATCH: Tim Walz Echoes Calls From Democrats to Abolish Electoral College

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz understands how antiquated and imbalanced the Electoral College is in the modern era, and signaled to Democrats that he's all for its abolishment once he and Kamala Harris are sworn into office.

According to Pew Research, 63% of Americans support eliminating the Electoral College, which elects the President through an indirect system that mostly involves states appointing electors on behalf of voters. It isn't guaranteed to match the popular vote, which has been problematic for Democrats in the modern era, particularly in 2000 and 2016 when the winner of the Popular Vote didn't win the Electoral College.

Appearing at a private fundraiser at California Governor Gavin Newsom's home in Sacramento, the Minnesota Governor seemed to surprise the attendees with his remarks. “The electoral college needs to go,” Gov. Walz said. “We need a national popular vote that is something. But that’s not the world we live in.”

Walz repeated his comments at a rally in Reno, Nevada, stressing that the President is supposed to be elected by the people, not a small segment of the population. The campaign has said it's not their official platform, but Walz isn't alone in his beliefs.

While Republicans immediately seized on the Coach's talking points by claiming he wants to "destroy the Constitution," they have no place whining when even Donald  Trump has also previously called for eliminating the Electoral College. Trump called it a "disaster for democracy" because he believed, incorrectly, it was responsible for former President Barack Obama's defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012.
