Who exactly are the January 6th defendants, those who have already been convicted for their involvement in the attack on the U.S. Capitol Building and those who have been alleged to have done so, including the Oath Keepers who have been charged with seditious conspiracy? Well, according to their own signs and clothing, as well as all the documentation obtained by law enforcement, and included in their indictments, they were folks who wanted to change the outcome o the 2020 election in Donald Trump’s favor.

It was only after the Oath Keepers members were charged with seditious conspiracy that Trump began to talk about pardoning January 6th defendants — a move that one attorney described as obstruction of justice, since it could encourage defendants not to cooperate with law enforcement and investigators; and that even Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been derided as Trump’s lapdog, said was not appropriate.
Responding on Newsmax, Trump called Graham a RINO and praised the January 6th participants, doubling down on his promise to pardon them “if things don’t work out fairly.”

Of course, in order for these defendants to think that Trump is going to swoop in and save them with a pardon, they would have to genuinely trust that he’ll retake the presidency — but then, his supporters have spent more than a year insisting he’ll be ‘reinstated,’ so perhaps being certain he’ll win in 2024 isn’t too far-fetched for them.
