WATCH: Susan Collins Refuses to Rule Out Supporting Trump in 2024 Despite Voting to Convict Him

Susan Collins spent much of Donald Trump’s president being “very concerned.” And sometimes, the Maine senator would even be willing to do the right thing and vote on bipartisan measures. But most of the time, she let Trump do whatever he wanted.

Following the January 6th insurrection, Collins voted to convict Trump of impeachment. If three more Republicans had done the same, Trump would have been permanently banned from running for office. Still, when pushed on Sunday, Collins refused to rule out supporting the former president if he was to run again in 2024.

During a Saturday night rally in Texas, Trump said he may pardon the January 6th insurrections if he was elected again. Referring to those comments, George Stephanopoulos asked Collins, “Given that, can you imagine any circumstance where you could support his election?”

“Well, we’re a long ways from 2024,” the Maine senator replied. “But let me say this. I do not think the president — President Trump should have made that pledge to do pardons. We should let the judicial process proceed. Jan. 6 was a dark day in our history.”

The host countered, “It was and you voted to convict President Trump. Why can’t you rule out supporting him in 2024?” Collins responded, “Certainly, it’s not likely, given the many other qualified candidates that we have that have expressed interest in running. So it’s very unlikely.”
