WATCH: Schwarzenegger Says Trumpism Looks Just Like Nazism

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican former governor of California, has released a powerful video message in which he shares his perspective, as an immigrant from Austria, of last week’s riot at the U.S. Capitol and the past four years of Donald Trump’s administration. In it, he likens the attack on the Capitol to Kristallnacht, the 1938 night of rampage and violence against Jews in Germany “by the Nazi equivalent of the Proud Boys.”

He also draws a direct parallel to the rise of Nazism in early 20th century Germany to the Trumpism of this decade. “It all started with lies and lies and lies, and intolerance.” Schwarzenegger said that Donald Trump used the same tactics in trying to seize a second term as president. “He sought a coup by misleading people with lies,” he said. “President Trump is a failed leader. He will go down in history as the worst president ever. The good thing is he will soon be as irrelevant as an old tweet.”

Schwarzenegger has an equally harsh critique of the lawmakers who went along with Trump’s scheme. “But what are we to make of the elected officials who have enabled his lies and treachery?” he asks. “John F. Kennedy wrote a book called ‘Profiles in Courage.’ A number of members of my own party, because of their own spinelessness, would never see their names in such a book. They’re complicit with those who carried the flag of self-righteous insurrection in the Capitol.”

He concludes by encouraging Republicans and Democrats to join together in supporting President-elect Joe Biden. “We wish you great success as our president. It you succeed our nation succeeds.”
