Doctor Anthony Fauci has become an internet and media sensation over the last few weeks. The New York based Doctor, who’s worked with multiple administrations, is considered one of the foremost immunologists in the country.
Donald Trump is not one of the key medical minds in the country. During his Friday press conference, the President felt the need to override Dr. Fauci’s advice. This led CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta to respond, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
During today’s presser, Fauci was asked about the drug chloroquine. Yesterday, Trump has claimed that the drug could fight coronavirus and was already FDA approved. The FDA later stepped in to deny that the drug had been approved for fight the disease.
Dr. Fauci answered, “The information that you’re referring to [regarding the drug] is anecdotal. It was not done in a controlled clinical trial, so you really can’t make any definitive statement about it.”
Trump then cut in, “What the doctor said is 100 percent correct, it is early. I have seen things that are impressive, we’ll see, we’ll know soon.”
Gupta was shown a clip of the exchange and asked by John King what he thought. The Doctor responded:
“I’ve never seen anything like it, John. That was incredible to see this back-and-forth. First of all, the president said that this drug was approved for coronavirus yesterday, it is not. He said there’s a lot of evidence to show how promising it is, there is a one 20-person study out of France that Dr. Tony Fauci described as ‘anecdotal.’”
