Yesterday was both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day in the United States. The way Columbus Day is thought of in the country has changed. Now many use the day to reckon with the atrocities committed by the ‘founder’ of the country.

There are, of course, those people who refuse to believe that Columbus ever did anything wrong. Rudy Giuliani, not all that surprisingly, is one of those people. On Monday, the former New York City Mayor argued that Columbus just did what anyone else would have in his position.
Giuliani made the comments during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s War Room Pandemic Show. He asked, “Did he engage in some immoral acts himself? Did he allow his crew to do it? There seems to be evidence that he did. But we don’t know that for sure. It’s hundreds of years ago.”
The sometimes lawyer continued, “Did he do anything that other men and women of his age would have done? No,” he added. “And have all of our other heroes done that? I mean, John F. Kennedy – now it’s a different age, but now we know things about John F. Kennedy that make him considerably less than perfect.”
