Since the attack on the U.S. Capitol Building, several legislators who were adjacent to or involved in the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement, which falsely asserted that Donald Trump won the election and had it ‘stolen’ from him, have said they’re under particular scrutiny. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) now specifically claims that the Department of Justice is screening his mail.
Gohmert does not say whether he’s claiming that the DOJ is opening his mail, or just that they’re examining the external envelope as it comes in, but he does assert that this has never happened before during his time in Congress, and that he’s now seen it on two pieces of mail: a stamp declaring that the item has been “received and reviewed and examined” by the Department of Justice.

HillReporter has reached out to the Department of Justice for any information about this process, and we will update this story upon response. We have also contacted Representative Gohmert for additional information.
In the meantime, a few things in Gohmert’s assertion stand out:
First, he describes the second piece of mail as a letter from a Christian missionary, as though to indicate that the sender is relevant, but does not identify the source of the first piece of mail.
Second, he does not state whether he has inquired into this alleged activity in any way between September, when he says it happened, and now, months later, and if so, what information he was given, if any, about the reason for the screening.
Finally, Gohmert seems to imply this is an ongoing issue of concern — and yet he says himself it has happened only twice, both times being almost five months ago.
