At a NATO ally meeting, U.S. President Joe Biden addressed a number of important questions regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including some of the triggers that could result in the United States’ increasing involvement.

In the CSPAN clip below, a reporter asks Biden if there is credible intelligence suggesting that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is either already using chemical weapons in his attacks on Ukraine, or is making plans and arrangements to do so. Biden refuses to publicly disclose the contents of classified intelligence reports, but does answer the second part of the question, regarding whether the United States and/or NATO would increase involvement in the conflict if Russia does engage with chemical weapons.

“You know, on the first question, I can’t answer that. I’m not going to give you intelligence data, Number one. Number two, we would respond. We would respond if [Putin] uses [chemical weapons]. The nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use.”
Biden also weighed in on Russia’s inclusion in the G20, affirming that he holds the opinion the nation should be excluded from the group.
Q: "Do you think that Russia needs to be removed from the G-20?"
President Biden: "My answer is yes." pic.twitter.com/jsRg6WtL83

“My answer is yes, but it depends on the G20. That was raised today, and I raised the possibility, if that can’t be done, if Indonesia and others do not agree, then we should, in my view, ask to have…Ukraine be able to attend the meeting and observe.”
The White House released a statement on the meeting, highlighting the promise of the U.S to release $1 billion in new support, including antiaircraft systems and ammunition, and on NATO’s agreement to shore up the collective defense.
