[WATCH] POTUS to Meet With GOP Leader McCarthy, But They Won’t Be Discussing the GOP

During Tuesday’s White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Jen Psaki spoke about President Joe Biden’s scheduled Wednesday meeting with House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Q-CA), which will come shortly after the party will likely vote to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) from her leadership position. Psaki said despite the timing, the President’s meeting with McCarthy won’t focus on the future of the Republican Party.

Psaki was asked whether President Biden thinks that the House GOP’s vote scheduled for Wednesday undermines his presidency. Republicans are pushing to oust Cheney as conference chair after she refused to bend to Donald Trump’s will and help him continue to push his lies about election fraud.

Psaki said that the main focus of the meeting is hopefully for President Biden and McCarthy to find common ground when it comes to the infrastructure package that the President is trying to push through Congress.

“The focus of this meeting is not on the future of the Republican Party,” Psaki told reporters. “They are neither seeking, nor is he offering, his perspective on that, nor will they resolve the identity of the party, who they are, what they will stand for,” Psaki said. “That won’t be resolved in this meeting.”

House GOP is scheduled to vote on the fate of Cheney’s leadership position. Both McCarthy and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (Q-LA) have come out in support of Rep. Elise Stefanik (Q-NY) to replace Cheney as the House GOP conference chair.
