[WATCH] POTUS Calls Texas Election Bill An ‘Assault On Democracy’

Texas state lawmakers have been busy taking away a lot of freedoms lately. Aside from criminalizing homeless encampments and a new abortion bill so archaic and restrictive, it bans the procedure at a stage far too early for most women to even know they’re pregnant, they’re now set to vote on an election integrity bill. The bill introduces new procedures and mandates for elections in the state that President Joe Biden says could “disproportionately” target Black and Brown voters.
“It’s wrong and un-American. In the 21st century, we should be making it easier, not harder, for every eligible voter to vote,” the President said in a statement on Saturday.

“It’s part of an assault on democracy that we’ve seen far too often this year—and often disproportionately targeting Black and Brown Americans,” the President’s statement continued.
The proposed legislation, which already passed in Texas’ House earlier this month, would restrict Sunday voting when many Black worshipers vote. It would also bar drive-through voting and 24-hour voting locations while giving more access to partisan poll watchers, among other things. The Republican-controlled Senate is expected to pass the legislation, and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has said he will sign it.

The moves come after Harris County, home to Houston and a huge percentage of Democratic voters, added drive-through polls and 24-hour polling places in 2020 for an election with record turnout in a state that has trended more Democratic in recent years.
