According to the New York Times, local leadership believes the militant Federal presence is making things worse. Governor Kate Brown has called it a blatant abuse of power, and Portland police commissioner and Mayor Ted Wheeler has called the Federal takeover irresponsible and asked the forces to leave the city. Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese has also said the actions of Federal forces are setting back efforts to reduce tensions.
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf has responded to these requests for Federal forces to leave the jurisdiction, appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show to say that he supports law enforcement but will not be complying with requests from local law enforcement to back off and leave it to the local leadership to handle things as they see fit.
Chad Wolf, *acting* director of DHS, went on the Hannity show to paint protesters in Portland as “violent anarchists” and said he is deploying federal police to crack down on graffiti and broken windows even though he was asked by city officials to leave. #FascistTrump pic.twitter.com/A5Q5nxPNUC

Donald Trump has spoken out vehemently against protests, threatening to have Antifa officially named as a terrorist organization, and warning of a ten-year prison sentence for anyone who removes a confederate monument.
