Donald Trump does not have many accomplishments that Republicans can hang their hat on. The GOP normally points to the nominations of Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch as a coup for the President. Both of those justices, however, have shown that they are more than willing to assert their independence against the party.
Cheif Justice John Roberts was also nomiation by a Republican president, George W. Bush. Roberts has been more of a moderate on a number of issues. This stance is upsetting to Mike Pence who recently complained that Roberts is a “dissapointment” to many Conservatives.
The Vice President made the comments during a conversation with the Christian Broadcast Network’s David Brody. “We have great respect for the institution of the Supreme Court of the United States, but Chief Justice Roberts has been a disappointment to conservatives,” Pence said. “Whether it be the Obamacare decision or whether it be a slate of recent decisions all the way through Calvary Chapel.”
“It’s a reminder. I think several cases out of the Supreme Court are a reminder how important this election is for the future of the Supreme Court. We remember the issue back in 2016 which I believe loomed large in voters decisions between Hilary Clinton and the man who would become the president of the United States. Some people thought it wouldn’t be this big of an issue these days, but I think that’s all changed.”
