WATCH: Obama Says He Should Have Given Dolly Parton Medal of Freedom, Will Urge Biden To Do So
Like every thing else in the Trump White House, the Presidential Medal of Freedom has ceased to be a way to honor American citizens and has been used as payment for political support. In February, Trump gave the Medal of Freedom to Rush Limbaugh, a racist, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ radio host. And after former football coach Lou Holtz challenged Joe Biden’s Catholicism during the RNC, he got a medal from the president.
With Joe Biden taking office in January, the award is likely to be used again to honor service and artistry. And Biden’s former boss has an idea for who he can award his first medal to. Obama told Stephen Colbert on Monday night he will urge Biden to give a Medal of Freedom to Dolly Parton.
During his time in office, Obama gave the medal to people like Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. Colbert reminded the 44th president that he never honored Parton.
Obama responded, “Actually, that was a screwup. I’m surprised. I think I assumed that she had already gotten one, and that was incorrect. She deserves one. I’ll call Biden.”
Parton is known for her good humor and charm in addition to her charitable efforts. In mid-November, it was revealed that the country legend had donated $1 million towards the development of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
