A new political ad is asking viewers to evaluate Donald Trump as a person while listening to his recent words about Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

There was no need to dig deep or browse through old material in making this particular Public Service Announcement. The Republican Accountability Project didn’t even have to bring up Trump’s praise of Putin during his presidential term, or his efforts to hide content from the meeting between the two.
Instead, everything in the ad is recent — not only the disturbing imagery out of Ukraine, but Trump’s own words, from his CPAC speech that took place with the invasion already underway.
“If Trump thinks Putin is smart, what does that make Trump?” the RAP asks.

“Putin declares a big portion of Ukraine as independent,” Trump says, explaining why he thinks the Russian dictator is a “genius.”
But words like, “He’s going to go in and be a peacekeeper” ring a little harder when played over actual footage of people fleeing their homes under fire.
“There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace alright,” also hits different when played alongside footage of one of these tanks appearing to almost consume a civilian vehicle as it drives over the car.
Trump can even be heard admitting that he and Putin discussed the latter’s desire to take control of Ukraine, and describing him as “outsmarting our country at every single step” — not exactly a presidential admission.
In the end, the question is put to the viewer: “What kind of person would call this smart?”
