WATCH: MSNBC Host Has a Message for Old School Republicans Who Allowed the Rise of GOP Crazies
Medhi Hasan isn’t buying John Boehner’s comments about the rise of crazies in the GOP. In fact, the MSNBC host thinks that the former Speaker of the House is partially responsible for their place in his party.
Boehner has written a new book where he rips a number of the Trumpiest senators and congresspeople. And, of course, he saves his harshest vitriol for Texas senator Ted Cruz. Hasan, though, says it is way too late and that old-school Republicans should have stopped these crazies when they had a chance.
The host begins, “The difference between the mainstream Republican party and the conspiracy addled far-Right has essentially vanished. Indeed, over the past few years we have reached a point where the point where people who believe that Democrats are Satan-worshiping cannibalistic pedophiles are embraced by a Republican president as well as elected officials in his party.”
Hasan then moves onto Boehner’s new book and reads off a number of the former Speaker’s criticisms about the members of his party. The host continues, “The reason we are where we are today is because these ‘old-school Republicans’ didn’t stand up to the crazies. They embraced them, however uneasily. Now the crazies are ascendant, and John Boehner wants to be celebrated for calling them crazy.”
“John Boehner wants us to pine for a simpler time,” Hasan closes, “where Republican conspiracy theorists weren’t actively working to subvert the government, but rather simple, hard-working corporate stooges who would literally distribute big tobacco’s campaign checks on the House floor.”
