Saturday Night Live has a long tradition of mocking the President of the United States. This began at the show’s inception when Chevy Chase would portray then President Gerald Ford.
All of the other presidents have taken the mockery in good humor. George H.W. Bush even invited Dana Carvey to come cheer up his staff after he lost the 1992 election to Bill Clinton.
Not surprisingly, Donald Trump is the exception. The notoriously thin-skinned former president was furious over Alec Baldwin’s impression of him. According to the Daily Beast, he even tried to use his power to make SNL stop.
The Daily Beast reported, “Trump had asked advisers and lawyers in early 2019 about what the Federal Communications Commission, the court systems, and — most confusingly to some Trump lieutenants — the Department of Justice could do to probe or mitigate SNL, Jimmy Kimmel, and other late-night comedy mischief-makers.”
The former president sent out a statement last night denying the report. Trump did, however claim, “I do believe that the 100% one-sided shows should be considered an illegal campaign contribution from the Democrat Party, hard to believe I got 75 million votes (the most of any sitting President) despite all of that, together with a very Fraudulent Election. 2024 or before!”
This was too much for Joe Scarborough to take. He laughingly remarked, “what I love most about his denials is they’re always followed by admissions. I deny I ever did that; however, you can find like the candlestick in the kitchen with Mr. Green.”
