Mitt Romney was among the prominent Republican voices to weigh in Sunday morning on the invasion of Ukraine that began earlier this week, and a rare right-wing voice to offer a criticism of Donald Trump. He also affirmed that he would expect the United States to meet its obligations by hitting Russia with full force if Vladimir Putin stages an invasion of any NATO member country.
Romney appeared on CNN Sunday morning, where he had a few positive things to say about President Joe Biden’s actions in imposing harsh sanctions on Russia, albeit sandwiched between criticisms. He also had criticism, when asked, for Donald Trump over the 2019 phone call in which he tried to pressure Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to produce damaging stories about Joe Biden in advance of the 2020 election.
In the clips below, you can see Romney declaring that, in the case of a Russian invasion of a NATO ally, the United States would “respond with full force,” then going on to describe Trump’s efforts to pressure Zelensky as “violation of a president’s responsibility to defend our nation and defend the cause of freedom,” and “an enormous error.”

Of course, in between, Romney also lauds Trump for now taking a position standing with the Ukrainian people. Of course, while Trump has verbalized support for Ukraine, even now there are reports that his advisors van’t get him to stopheaping compliments and praise on Vladimir Putin, no matter how they try.
