WATCH: Mike Lindell & Michele Bachmann Claim 2016 Election Was “Stolen” From Trump Too

It’s no longer enough for Donald Trump’s admirers to falsely claim that the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ from him. Now, they’re diving even further into the past to insist that ‘corruption’ changed the outcome of the 2016 election, too.

Despite winning the electoral vote in 2016, Donald Trump wasn’t satisfied. He insisted that Hillary Clinton only won the popular vote because of ‘illegal’ ballots. The Washington Post quoted him at the time, claiming that people who had voted for Republican candidates had their ballots “switche[d] over to Democrats,” and that he actually did win the popular vote “if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”

Trump has reiterated this claim a few times over the years, but it hasn’t been a key focus, unlike the Big Lie after his loss.

However, as can be seen below, some of the most vocal proponents of the Big Lie are now incorporating unsupported claims about 2016 — watch Michele Bachmann and Mike Lindell discuss with Steve Bannon their claim that Trump won Minnesota in 2016.

Bannon: “No, the thing that sticks under his craw in ’16 is Minnesota. He says we left one on the table.”
Bachmann: “It’s true! He won it in 2016, but we had a corrupt secretary of state, and that is a problem.”
Lindell: “Just so everybody knows, in Minnesota, he did win by 68 thousand votes in 2020.

The actual vote outcome can be seen on the Minnesota official Secretary of State website, showing that in 2016, Trump lost to Clinton by only tens of thousands of votes — 1,322,951 to her 1,367,716.

In 2020, contrary to Lindell’s claims, Trump lost Minnesota by a larger margin, taking 1,484,065 votes while Joe Biden received 1,717,077 — a difference of more than 230k votes and 7 percentage points.
