One significant element of the last election cycle was how Donald Trump’s lies about election security affected the outcomes. We’ll never know the exact number of eligible voters who decided not to cast a ballot because of misguided fears about election integrity, but it’s pretty clearly nonzero, and Republicans are starting to reveal how worried they are about it.
First, it was Trump’s own loss in 2020. According to CNN, voting records matched to some defendants who showed up at the Capitol on January 6th showed that, while they believed the election was stolen, they didn’t cast a vote in it. While Trump was demonizing mail-in ballots, his own team was robocalling their voters and begging them to cast a vote by mail.
Then, after he lost, it was the Georgia Senate special elections. Two Democrats, two Republicans, and two tight races — and both Dems went to the Senate. NPR reports that Republican strategists blame Trump for this, saying that the GOP candidates were constantly pressured to keep up with his ‘rigged election’ rhetoric.
Now it’s Marjorie Taylor Greene expressing concern about the 2022 races. She’s not admitting that the 2020 election was fair and valid, but she’s still afraid that the widespread denial of that fact among the MAGA crowd will cost Republicans in the midterms.
Marjorie Taylor Greene is concerned that the Republican base is still angry over the 2020 election and won’t vote in the midterms, but then immediately repeats the big lie which essentially tells the Republican base their votes don’t count. pic.twitter.com/G1q0PXDEAV

“I don’t think it’s going to be a big red wave, but maybe it will be…I’m concerned about the people that are still angry and don’t want to vote. We need them to vote….I’m one of the first people to tell you I don’t believe the election results of 2020. I have no problem saying that. I believe Trump won…but I think there’s people that feel that way and they’re still angry and they may not want to vote, but we have to. If we don’t vote we are handing over victory to the radical godless left…”
