Donald Trump has always portrayed himself as a President who loves the United States military. He consistently references his support for the Armed Forces on Twitter and during his rallies. The President, however, upset many members of the military when he pulled US support away from Kurdish allies.
Now, a Republican group called Defending Democracy Together wants to let Trump know how a Marine who served alongside the Kurds feels about his decision. The group will air a new commercial blasting the President during the Wednesday episode of Fox & Friends.
The group is run by Republican and “Never Trumper” Bill Kristol. Kristol said in a statement, “The Kurds in Syria have been America’s most effective local ally in fighting ISIS. This is an indefensible betrayal of a key U.S. ally, and every American should remember this shame and dishonor so that we never repeat this mistake again.”
The commercial features Sgt. Joe Jenkins who served two tours in Iraq’s Anbar province. “Every Marine knows that you don’t leave a Marine behind. You don’t leave an ally behind,” says Jenkins. “So why are we leaving the Kurds behind? That’s not right.”
Jenkins also wonders, “How long can America keep relying on others when we turn our backs?”
The House held a vote to condemn Trump’s decision to leave Syria in mid-October. A bipartisan majority supported the bill 354-60.
The spot ends by asking viewers to sign a petition targeting the Republicans who voted against the measure.
