[WATCH] ‘Let’s Not Take Our Eye Off the Ball’: Nancy Pelosi Talks About the Stakes in Abortion Ruling

The initial burst of outrage which began on Monday night has now become a full-on firestorm over a pending Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v Wade, the 1973 ruling which has safeguarded the right to abortion. The leaked draft ruling written by Justice Samuel Alito is supported by Justice Clarence Thomas and the three conservative justices appointed by Donald Trump: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Despite their initial promises to uphold settled law, the three Trump justices, all of whom were suggested by members of The Federalist Society, were ultimately hurried through the nomination process for this exact reason. The SCOTUS ruling would also overturn Planned Parenthood v Casey, the 1992 decision that upheld Roe.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is racing to finally get Roe codified after years of inaction, but that would require a compromise: the Senate would have to finally end the filibuster, the rule that requires a 60-vote majority for most legislation. That seems unlikely, given the 50-50 split in the chamber and opposition from moderate Democrats such as Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is giving her party the impetus they need to get the vote passed. “The Republican-appointed justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history,” Speaker Pelosi said. Several of these conservative justices, who are in no way accountable to the American people, have lied to the US Senate, ripped up the Constitution, and defiled both precedent and the supreme court’s reputation.”

Watch Speaker Pelosi with Nicole Wallace on “Deadline: White House,” where she told her fellow Democrats to stay focused on protecting the right to abortion and make that their focus with their messaging.
