WATCH: Lectern Thief’s Lawyers Tell Chris Cuomo, “He Was There to Witness a Little History”

Scenes from last weeks insurrection were broadcast live on air and posted on social media. Most of the images and videos were disgusting and terrifying. The most viral image though, was of a man carrying Nancy Pelosi’s lectern out of the building.

The man, Adam Johnson, was arrested later in the week and was charged with entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; one count of theft of government property. On Monday night, lawyers for the man appeared on CNN to defend him. They told Chris Cuomo, “he was there to witness history.”

David Bigny and Dan Eckhart said to the host, “To be honest with you it’s, you know, you always can’t judge a book by its cover, so to speak. You’ve got the photos and a lot of things on social media where they’re demonizing Mr. Johnson. It is really a mischaracterization. He is a family man.”

Cuomo responded, “So he is not part of some extremist group? He wasn’t part of an organized effort to get into the Capitol?”

The lawyers countered, “No, he certainly wasn’t. He was there to witness a little bit of history and that’s the extent of it. He wasn’t involved in any coup. He wasn’t involved in any planning of any entering of the Capitol. Things got out of hand. You saw the pictures. He was not there for any destruction, any treason. He was just there to witness history.”
