In the past week, text messages have been revealed demonstrating that a variety of people, including right-wing legislators and media personalities, contacted Mark Meadows during the attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6th to plead with Donald Trump to stop the attack. Though it’s no admission of guilt and doesn’t demonstrate foreknowledge on any party’s part, it strongly suggests they all believed that Trump had the power to make it stop — and he let it run on, instead.
In response, Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, is appearing on Fox News to address the then-president’s role in the attack, and her story is a complete reversal. In her version, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had the power to stop or prevent the attack, if only she would have listened to Trump, who had enough foreknowledge to “try to warn” everyone that it was coming.

“They all know that Donald Trump didn’t orchestrate this whole thing. He didn’t tell people to go to the Capitol and break in…But he tried to warn them. So many people tried to warn Nancy Pelosi, so why didn’t they have the adequate security there?”
One of the things that the House Select Committee is actively trying to determine is who, if anyone, in the Trump White House had foreknowledge of the attack. Trump has not admitted to any awareness in advance, though he did tell his fans at a January 6th rally that they were all going to march to the Capitol to be heard, and did encourage people to show up and “be wild.”
