[WATCH] Lamar Alexander Thinks Trump’s Leaving WHO Is A Mistake
Lamar Alexander who serves as Republican Senator to of Tennessee has sided against President Trump when it comes to leaving the World Health Organization. Alexander who chairs the Senate health committee made his feelings known on Tuesday as he is not running for reelection in November.
Alexander said, “I disagree with the president’s decision. Certainly, there needs to be a good, hard look at mistakes the World Health Organization might have made in connection with coronavirus, but the time to do that is after the crisis has been dealt with, not in the middle of it.” Alexander set out to caution how leaving the WHO could negatively impact the ability to develop a vaccine. He continued, “Withdrawing U.S. membership could, among other things, interfere with clinical trials that are essential to the development of vaccines, which citizens of the United States, as well as others in the world, need. And withdrawing could make it harder to work with other countries to stop viruses before they get to the United States.”
According to Newsweek, a White House senior official revealed that America’s WHO withdrawal notice will be official on July 6, 2021, and that the United Nations Secretary-General was aware of the notice. A tweet by Democratic Senator Bob Mendez confirmed that Congress had also been made aware of the date. According to Newsweek, the WHO is also aware of the U.S. official notice of withdrawal but did not provide a comment.
President Trump is keeping his word when it comes to pulling out of the WHO. He made the pledge earlier this year after what he characterized as the WHO mishandling China’s coronavirus response. The problem is that Trump is doing this as many states are seeing a rise in coronavirus cases. The move is also contrary to the advice of public health officials and Democrats. Mendez wrote in his tweet, “To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn’t do it justice,” Menendez wrote in a tweet. “This won’t protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone.”
Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the @WHO in the midst of a pandemic.

Senator Ahttps://twitter.com/SenatorMenendez/status/1280556507365597190lexander said the better alternative to leaving the WHO would be for Trump to advise Congress on “specific recommendations for reforms” regarding the WHO so we can “we can work together to make those happen.” Alexander may find plenty of agreement with Democrats but he is one of few in the GOP. Republican James Comer said, “China lied, the WHO complied and Americans died. From the very start, the WHO and Secretary-General Tedros [Adhanom Ghebreyesus] have proven that their priority has been to assist the Chinese government at the expense of the American people and the rest of the world.” He added, “Until the WHO undergoes some serious reforms,” Comer added, “it doesn’t deserve our money or our membership.”
