WATCH: Kinzinger Calls Out “Boring” Trump Speech, Hawley’s “Smug Face”
Donald Trump: “boring and low energy.” Josh Hawley: “smug face” and “embarrassing.” Those are just a couple of the observations of Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger about last week’s CPAC GOP hate-fest in Orlando.
The anti-Trump Republican offered a harsh review of the former guy’s 90-minute address to his faithful, in response to CNN host Alysin Camerota’s question, “Did you really think it was boring, weak and low energy?” “I really did because if that was the first time you heard Donald Trump speak it would have shocking and all that,” he replied. “But it was the same exact … he could have given that speech in September. He had no new ideas. To me it was just somebody who needed his monthly dose of adoration in front of a crowd. It was hard to get through.”
Camerota also asked Kinzinger if he thought Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, would ask FBI director Christopher Wray thoughtful questions today when testifies about intelligence failures leading up to deadly the Jan. 6 insurrectionist riot on Capitol Hill. To sum up his response: not so much.
“All you have to do is see Josh Hawley’s smug face at CPAC as he stood in front, getting this adulation from the crowd,” Kinzinger said. “He’s out there feeling great about it — there are five people dead, two that took their own life on top of that because of what you did. It’s embarrassing.”
Kinzinger admitted that the Republican base loves Hawley because of his conservative views, but noted, “I’m probably as conservative as him, but the difference between me and him is I am not going to use the Constitution as a prop to get elected and violate the Constitution as a prop to get elected.”
