Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is suffering lowered approval ratings and political attacks from within his own party as the former president continues to denigrate him. Still, he’s not without some support from Republicans — but will a glowing review from President Joe Biden damage that further?

At the National Prayer Breakfast, President Biden addressed McConnell, who members of the Trump Party have derided as a ‘RINO’ and blamed for Trump’s 2020 loss, suggesting that if he had supported the Big Lie, perhaps it would have helped Team Trump put the pressure on to overturn the election results. For his part, McConnell has openly criticized Trump more than once — something that never sits well with the former president’s loyal fan base.
Now there’s something else for Trumpists to hold against McConnell: Biden’s effusive praise, in which he describes McConnell as a friend, a man of honor, and someone who always does exactly what he promises.
“Mitch McConnell…Mitch, I don’t wanna hurt your reputation, but we really are friends. And that is not an epiphany we’re having here at the moment. You’ve always done exactly what you’ve said. You’re a man of your word, and a man of honor. Thank you for being my friend.”
A Gallup poll in December reported that McConnell’s approval rating among Republicans had fallen to 46% — although it didn’t divide respondents into classic Republican and MAGA Republican, there’s little doubt Trump’s rhetoric has a role in that rating.
Biden heaping praise on McConnell, especially in the midst of a Supreme Court nomination, following the former Majority Leader’s outsized role in blocking the last nominee from a Democratic President, can be expected to elicit a response from the ‘former guy,’ as well as his supporters.
