[WATCH] Key Questions Still Unanswered About January 6th

As the Select Committee prepares to open its first day of questioning on Tuesday, there is still so much the American people don’t know about the events of January 6th. In the six months that have elapsed since that day, Republicans have done all they can to obstruct all of the truth about the armed insurrection from becoming public knowledge. But with two members of the GOP now sitting on the committee–and House GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy stooping to call Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger “Pelosi Republicans” for accepting seats on the committee he pulled three other Republicans from–any future stonewalling from the GOP might prove to be difficult.

It’ll be interesting to see which House Republicans receive subpoenas–there are four alliteratively named contenders vying for early deliveries–and even more interesting to see if they to show up to testify.

The biggest questions that linger in the minds of everyone who watched the events unfold live on TV or online usually revolve around “How did this happen?”, which is the giant umbrella with many answers beneath it. We know what Lauren Boebert tweeted on the day, and that she gave her mother and their friends a tour of the Capitol on January 5th, so when she’s called by the committee–and she will be, along with so many others who still voted against certifying the election even after the horrific events that had taken place–what more will we learn?

Along with questions about the events of the day, the public’s other biggest question is: are any of the Republicans who’ll be called to testify actually respond? We’ve seen other Republicans ignore Congressional subpoenas with zero consequences, so how will this committee hold their colleagues accountable, especially when they’re still loyal to the Florida Retiree?

Mehdi Hasan of MSNBC had some questions of his own and outlined what he calls the top five he wants to be asked of anyone called to testify:

  1. Were any Republicans involved in the planning?
  2. Were any Republicans in contact with any of the rioters before the attack on the Capitol?
  3. What was the real timeline with calling in the National Guard?
  4. Why were Capitol Police so unprepared?
  5. What did Donald Trump know, and when did he know it?

Hasan rightly demands accountability. Watch the full segment, below.
