Vice President Kamala Harris has made reproductive rights a major part of her campaign, with a bus tour currently crossing the country with local Democrats and other Harris/Walz surrogates discussing the importance of electing the ticket to restore Roe v. Wade.
During her fourth visit to Wisconsin on Tuesday, the Vice President sat down for a new interview and affirmed that she supports ending the Senate filibuster to ensure a path to codify the Constitution's right to an abortion that was struck down by the Supreme Court two years ago.
The filibuster can be used as an attempt to delay or block a vote for a piece of legislation. Eliminating it would effectively allow the Senate to pass certain pieces of legislation with a simple majority rather than meeting a 60-vote threshold.
“I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe,” Vice President Harris told WPR's Wisconsin Today. “And get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.”
It's not a new stance for the Vice President, who has a history of supporting the end of the filibuster to protect reproductive and voting rights. As a Senator and candidate for President in 2019, the VP also said she would support ending the filibuster to pass environmental legislation known as the Green New Deal.
