[WATCH] Kamala Harris Gives Democratic CounterSpeech Ahead of RNC’s Final Night
Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris stepped in front of the cameras Thursday afternoon to deliver her party’s official counter remarks ahead of the final night of the Republican National Convention. In her 25-minute-long speech, Harris addresses the damage from Hurricane Laura, the Coronavirus epidemic, the shooting of unarmed Jacob Blake that spurned the deadly riots in Kenosha, and the wildfires in California before getting to her main target: the official Republican Party nominee.
Instead of waiting for Trump to make his remarks and then responding to them individually as has been the tradition in previous years, Harris took the opportunity to make a pre-emptive strike. “Donald Trump has failed,” she says in the video, below. “It’s not supposed to be about him. It’s supposed to be about the health and safety and wellbeing of the American people. At its most basic level, Donald Trump doesn’t understand the Presidency.”
Harris also spoke warmly of her running mate, Joe Biden, saying that they will always listen to what their constituents have to say. Her remarks drew a sharp contrast to her opponent, Mike Pence, who spoke last night in front of a crowd at Fort McHenry that was neither masked nor socially distanced. Pence attacked Biden and the Democratic National Convention by saying, “Democrats spent four days attacking America. Joe Biden said we were living through a ‘season of American darkness.’ But as President Trump said, ‘where Joe Biden sees American darkness, we see American greatness.'”
The Republicans will wrap their convention Thursday night with Donald Trump officially accepted his party’s nomination. Other speakers will include his daughter, Ivanka Trump, as well as Mitch McConnell, Rudy Giuliani, and Kevin McCarthy, among others.
