America can really use an expanded form of gun control. This has become quite clear with mass shootings occurring on a near-weekly basis. The people of the country are behind the idea as well with polling regularly showing that Americans back gun control.

Debbie Lesko, (R-AZ), speaks as Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Peter Gaynor testifies before a House Committee on Homeland Security meeting on Capitol Hill, July 22, 2020 in Washington, DC. NRA-controlled Republicans, though, have been ruthlessly opposed to gun control. They will blame anything besides guns for violence. And they will come up with incredibly insane arguments.

A June clip recently resurfaced of Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko giving a floor speech. During her rant, the Republican said that she would shoot her own grandchildren if that’s what it took to defend their freedom.

Standing up against Red Flag laws, Lesko said, “I have five grandchildren. I would do anything—anything—to protect my five grandchildren. Including, as a last resort, shooting them, if I had to, to protect the lives of my grandchildren.”

The GOP Rep. continued, “Democrat bills that we’ve heard this week want to take away my right, my right, to protect my grandchildren. They want to take away the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect their own children and grandchildren and wives and brothers and sisters.”

While it is common for Republicans to create wildly implausible scenarios to defend their opinions, this one is quite rich. It would be hard for Hollywood’s best screenwriters to come up with a situation where a congresswoman would have to shoot her own grandchildren to save them.
