"Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver is incredibly proud to be an immigrant, having become an American citizen just ahead of the 2020 election.
Oliver has extensively covered the election process over the years, and he's taken plenty of time to go after Donald Trump. On Sunday night's show, their last before Election Day, Oliver made an emotional plea at the end of the episode for everyone to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Most of Sunday's show was dedicated to parsing the inner machinations of Trump's businesses, which was marked by Oliver's usual NSFW insults while decimating Trump's smokescreen of being a successful businessman. The show's excellent writing staff and researchers went above and beyond on this one.
After he was finished demolishing Donald, Oliver took a more serious tone to make his case for Kamala Harris directly to anyone either in his studio audience or viewing on MAX who was undecided or hadn't voted early.
“Elections alone aren’t efficient for large-scale change, but they’re absolutely necessary for it to ever happen," Oliver said.
Oliver grew emotional as he continued: “Look, I love this country. I’m an immigrant. I chose to be here. In the words of the late, great Lee Greenwood, ‘I’m proud to be an American.’ And I’d argue there is nothing more American than having a healthy, adversarial relationship with those in power, even if you voted for them.”
Saying he believes Trump is "done, and doesn't that sound great?" Oliver endorsed Kamala Harris and wrapped up his plea by making one final point.
"Wouldn’t it be great to live in a world where he’s no longer an active threat, just an annoyance? Oliver mused. "I so badly want to live in that world and I hope everyone does everything in their power in the next 48 hours to make that world possible.”
