Last night, the 14th congressional district of New York saw one of the largest surprises in the state’s congressional primary history, as a 28-year-old Latina woman, named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, defeated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, who had previously held his congressional seat for 10 terms.
In a time when political battles get heated, it has become rare for a losing candidate to truly embrace their opponent after suffering a defeat. This certainly wasn’t the case last night, after Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic Primary over Crowley by a vote count of 15,897 (57.5%) to 11,761 (42.5). Crowley was heavily favored in the small New York district, but the underdog came out on top.
As supporters of Congressman Crowley gathered to witness his concession speech, instead of criticizing or demeaning his opponent, he went in the complete opposite direction, complementing her and then proceeding to pull out his guitar to dedicate the song “Born to Run” to Ocasio-Cortez, in what was a moving moment, not just for his supporters, but for the entire Democratic party. The full video footage of Crowley’s concession speech and musical theatrics can be seen below:

One thing that you certainly can not say about Joe Crowley is that he is a sore loser.
