WATCH: January 6th Committee Lays Out How Trump Campaign Conned Donors Into Supporting A Non-Existent Fund

A senior investigative counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives gave testimony before the January 6th Committee that was released in the panel’s second live public hearing. In this testimony, she described the findings of an investigation into Donald Trump’s “Official Election Defense Fund.” The conclusion? The fund never existed.

Amanda Wick has a significant history of investigative work for the U.S. Government, including working for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Task Force, and as a Senior Policy Advisor to the U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes.

In this video deposition, she explains how an investigation uncovered that the “Official Election Defense Fund” the Trump campaign was begging donations for did not exist.

“Between election day and January 6th, the Trump Campaign sent millions of fundraising emails to Trump supporters, sometimes as many as 25 a day. The emails claimed a, quote, “left-wing mob,” was undermining the election, implored supporters to quote, “step up to protect the integrity of the election,” and encouraged them to, quote, “fight back.”

As the Select Committee has demonstrated, the Trump Campaign knew these claims of voter fraud were false, yet they continued to barrage small-dollar donors with emails, encouraging them to donate to something called the Official Election Defense Fund…The Select Committee discovered no such fund existed.”

She says that these false claims netted Trump and his allies $250 million — nearly $100 million of that in the week following his election loss — all for a ‘fund’ that Former Trump Campaign Digital Director Gary Coby describes as a ‘marketing tactic,’ and says was “just topic matter, where money could potentially go to be, how money could potentially be used.”
