[WATCH] Jan 6th Committee Hearings Resume Tuesday With Focus On Coordination Between Trump Allies and Militias

Two connected and shocking facts gleaned from Cassidy Hutchinson’s surprise testimony before the January 6th House Select Committee were that Trump didn’t care if the crowd had weapons on them, and members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys skipped Trump’s speech at the Ellipse to do a little recon on the security over at the Capitol.

Trump had demanded the metal detectors at the Ellipse be turned off so anyone carrying weapons could get as close as they wanted. He needed the optics of a packed crowd for the TV cameras. “They’re not here to hurt me,” he said, according to Hutchinson. By the time the crowd arrived at the Capitol at Trump’s direction, the first line of security had already been breached by members of both citizens’ militias in what has become increasingly apparent as a coordinated effort between Trump’s allies.

As the Committee prepares for its next televised hearing on Tuesday that will focus on the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, one major question will hang over the proceedings until someone can answer it: Did Donald Trump know the two militant factions were going to make sure the crowd could get into the Capitol to attack Congress, specifically House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence?

Tuesday’s hearing, scheduled for 1pm EST, is going to draw connections between the militant groups that took part in the riot and government officials close to Trump, and even Trump himself. Thursday’s hearing will continue the questioning in a primetime hearing led by Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL). It’s not known if Thursday night’s broadcast will be the Committee’s final hearing before they deliver their expected final report in September.
