WATCH: In Under 4 Minutes, Adam Schiff Lays Out Exactly Why Donald Trump’s Actions Are So Egregious

Across the nation and around the globe, people watched in horror as Donald Trump destroyed one precedent after another. Things that people never thought a president could do, just because no other person who has ever held the office would have ever deigned to carry them out, were normalized under Donald Trump. Then, Trump lost the election, and after that, the efforts to overturn the election turned into something of a horror show, as everyone waited to learn whether we’d still have a democracy when it was over.

Adam Schiff (D-CA) delivers remarks during the fourth hearing by the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol in the Cannon House Office Building on June 21, 2022 in Washington, DC. The bipartisan committee, which has been gathering evidence for almost a year related to the January 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol, is presenting its findings in a series of televised hearings. Trump isn’t the first president to exhibit unbecoming behavior in office, the first to become the center of controversy, or even the first to be impeached. (He does hold the dubious honor of being the first to be impeached twice, though.) So, what is it about his actions, exactly, that makes them so much more chilling?

Representative Adam Schiff, at the end of the Tuesday afternoon public hearing of the January 6th Committee, gave closing remarks that summed it up in a few short minutes. You can hear his closing statement below.

For more than 200 years, our democracy has been distinguished by the peaceful transfer of power. When an American raises their right hand and takes the presidential oath of office, they are transformed from an ordinary citizen into the most powerful person in the world…..When Donald Trump used the power of the presidency to try to stay in office after losing the election to Joe Biden, he broke that sacred and centuries-old covenant. Whether his actions were criminal will ultimately be for others to decide, but what he did was without a doubt unconstitutional it was unpatriotic, and it was fundamentally un-American.
