Following Paul Ryan’s retirement in 2018, Kevin McCarthy became the House Minority Leader. And in that position, he has shown a willingness to do whatever it takes to stay in power.
Following the January insurrection, the California lawmaker headed down to Mar-a-Lago to pledge his loyalty to Donald Trump. And whenever one of his members does something controversial, McCarthy essentially ignores it. This was the case recently after Lauren Boebert made a number of offensive statements about Muslims. During a Sunday CNN spot, Ilhan Omar, Boebert’s most frequent victim, called McCarthy a liar and a coward over his inaction.
The Minnesota Democrat told Jake Tapper, “McCarthy is a liar and a coward. He doesn’t have the ability to condemn the kind of bigoted Islamaphobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric that are being trafficked by a member of his conference.”
Omar continued, “This is who they are. We have to be able to stand up to them. And we have to push them to reckon with the fact that their party right now is normalizing anti-Muslim bigotry.”
